President's Message
Winter 2019
As seasonal festivities begin and the year rapidly draws to a close, I would like to thank you for your support and confidence in selecting SMS Equipment as your equipment and solutions provider. Our 2,400 employees across Canada and Alaska are committed to keeping your jobs running with high-quality products, parts and service support, wherever your equipment takes you.
2019 was a year of growth and recognition for our company as we were awarded two President’s Awards for supporting autonomous technology in Canada. The number of driverless mining haul trucks operating in Canada continues to grow, supported by our SMS Advanced Technologies team, and we are becoming recognized as a global leader in the implementation of this technology. Well done, team!
Our Smart Construction business also continues to expand as we now deliver both Komatsu iMC equipment and aftermarket machine control systems. As a one-stop-shop for construction technology, our technology team gives you an edge with the best-suited product solutions for any application. In December, we proudly welcomed BOMAG, a world-renowned soil, asphalt and waste compaction line to compliment our overall equipment offering.
Another part of the growth trend is our facility expansion. In November, the Regina branch moved into a new location with extra space in the shop and yard. Meanwhile, we are in the final construction stage of the Acheson Reman facility expansion and new corporate office complex, which effectively doubles the capacity to support our customers’ long-term exchange component demands for years to come.
In addition to their dedication to customers, our employees continue to generously share their time and resources with the communities where they live and work. We are incredibly proud to say that SMS Equipment has exceeded $1M in donations to the Stollery Children’s Hospital over our history of giving, including direct contributions through the Children’s Miracle Network.
As we look ahead to 2020, we are mindful of the economic headwinds in facing Canada and the world. Especially in Alberta, where the economy is linked directly to the health of the oil and gas sector and its ability to access markets beyond provincial borders. We will not let this deter us and will stay focused on ensuring we help our customers become more competitive through our products, technologies and support.
