Powering Progress: Battery Electric Vehicle Charging for Mobile Mining Equipment

Tuesday, May 6, 2025
10:30 AM - 10:55 AM
Room 510B

Speaker: Dillon McKinnon - Manager, Mining Equipment Technology, SMS Equipment and Bill Nassauer, Director, Partner Development - Decarbonization & Electrification, Komatsu

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are gaining traction as a viable solution in the transition to sustainable mining operations. While BEVs offer operational efficiencies and reduced environmental impact, their adoption must carefully consider charging infrastructure, battery lifecycle management, and energy supply challenges. This presentation will examine the current state of battery charging technology, focusing on both static and dynamic charging solutions. We will highlight OEM initiatives in this field, how the eco-system of charging solutions and BEV equipment is evolving and discuss the essential considerations for infrastructure needs, energy sourcing, interoperability and the challenges the industry must overcome for the widespread adoption of BEVs.

The Scoop on Electric Hydraulic Mining Shovels: Reducing Emissions, Improving TCO, and Second-Life Applications

Monday, May 5, 2025
3:30 PM - 3:55 PM
Room 513C

Speaker: Bryce Short - Area Manager, Komatsu Germany Mining

This presentation explores the rising trend of electric adoption in hydraulic mining shovels and excavators. While electrification of these mega-machines is not new, its popularity is surging as miners seek sustainable and efficient alternatives to Diesel power. The growing demand for reduced emissions in the mining sector underscores a broader shift toward greener solutions. We will cover the history of electrification in these machines, the significant benefits of electric options - including reduced emissions, lower operational costs, and improved energy efficiency - alongside challenges such as initial investment and infrastructure needs. The presentation will conclude with a compelling customer business case for electric adoption, focusing on carbon footprint and total cost of ownership (TCO) when transitioning from diesel engines to electric power. This transition not only provides a “second life” for machines but also extends equipment lifecycles and promotes sustainability.

Key Insights for the Successful Implementation of Proximity Detection & Collision Avoidance Technology - A Technology Provider Perspective

Tuesday, May 6, 2025
11:20 am - 11.45 am
Room 510D

Speakers: Dillon McKinnon - Manager, Mining Equipment Technology, SMS Equipment and Craig Hoffmann - Principal Consultant, Digital Mining Technology, Wabtec

Each year, 30-40% of mining industry fatalities result from failures in vehicle interaction controls (EMESRT, 2023). This presentation will explore how Proximity Detection & Collision Avoidance Technologies (CAS) can be implemented and leveraged to enhance safety and reduce risks with a well-planned approach. We will differentiate between Level 7 - Operator Awareness, Level 8 - Advisory Controls, and Level 9 – Intervention Controls, helping mine Operators to understand a pragmatic approach to adopting this technology. The role of and alignment with industry best practices from EMESRT and ICMM, and discuss implementation strategies, change management best practices and experiences with managing stakeholder expectations based on the learnings from one of the largest global CAS deployments in the Canadian mining industry.
