Natalie Ladd remembers what first drew her to apply for a job with SMS Equipment in 2012. She even recalls including it in the cover letter she submitted with her resume. She wanted to work for a local company that knew what they provided to industries and would have opportunities for future growth.

The cover letter and interview were successful, and Natalie joined the company as an accounts payable clerk. She spent five years in that department before moving into a product coordinator role supporting corporate construction sales.

"I loved that job. I was always learning – about different product lines, new machines, industries we catered to, and our customers' unique applications for this impressive equipment," says Natalie. "Working with a team to assist our customers and get them the equipment they wanted as quickly and efficiently as possible was exciting."

Levelling up

Her passion for the work was evident, and she excelled in becoming the team lead for the group. However, seeking continuous growth opportunities, Natalie decided it was time for a new challenge. She aspired to step into a management role and recognized that pursuing further education or obtaining a designation would be instrumental in achieving that goal.

After reflecting upon what she liked most about working in product coordination, she started the supply chain designation program in September 2021. It's a three-year program designed to be completed while working full-time, and Natalie is about halfway through.

Even though the program isn't complete, it's already helped Natalie make a significant career move. In August 2022, she joined the supply chain team as inventory supervisor for the Mining Operations team in Alberta and Northwest Territories.

What it means to be a leader

Natalie is proud to be part of a team of experts in part and supply chain dedicated to serving customers.

"They understand what our customers need and are comfortable sharing their expertise with them. They are intelligent and professional, and I feel very privileged to be their leader."

"Over my time at SMS Equipment, I've learned a lot about being a leader, and it's really about taking care of people. It's not knowing everything about what they do, but making sure they have the tools to be successful and feel good about their contributions," says Natalie.

The best is yet to come

As the company celebrates 15 years in business, Natalie can't help but reflect on her cover letter and first impressions of SMS Equipment more than a decade ago. She believed there was a bright future and endless opportunities with the organization. And she was right.

"It's very exciting to think about what's to come – especially when it comes to technology and innovation. From the solutions for our customers to how we connect as colleagues, the next 15 years will bring even more growth opportunities."

As of January 01, 2024, Natalie has gone back to her roots and taken a new role as the Supply Chain Manager for our Western Sales team. “I am exactly where I am meant to be,” exclaimed Natalie. “The scope of the role has evolved since I was in the department previously, and I am excited about the opportunity to work with a team I am familiar with, growing and expanding our influence in the industry.” Natalie is here to inspire excellence within her team and will continue developing her skills as a mentor.
