T.O.C. compact equipment built for the rental industry

Troy and Cory Goossen have always had a love for big iron.Growing up on a farm in southern Manitoba, the two brothers watched their father operate equipment on the family farm and construction sites.

In 2009, Troy and Cory decided to combine their passion for machines and their entrepreneurial spirits and start-up T.O.C. Rental and Sales Inc., an equipment rental house in Rosenort, Man.

The first piece of equipment we bought was a concrete power trowel, then  an aerial lift because we were interested in them,” Cory recalls. “Now we have around 20 items that we rent out.”

The company has grown organically, slowly adding on equipment as they listened to inquiries from customers.

“The first couple of years were slow, mostly evening and weekends,” Cory says. “The last few years we put a lot of money and time into the business. Then, I quit my other job and went full-time into the rental business.”

In the early years, the company mainly serviced local contractors in the area. But as T.O.C. Rental and Sales grew, so did their customer base.

“We’re almost a fifty-fifty split between contractors and homeowners doing their own projects – pouring a concrete pad, building a deck or using a skid steer to do a little landscaping around their house,” Cory says. “In the beginning, it was more contractors, but we live in a farming community, so there are lots of farmers that need equipment like an aerial lift for work on their barns and bins.”

While searching around for a new dealer to work with for purchasing some compact equipment, a client of T.O.C. Rentals and Sales recommended they speak with SMS Equipment.

We weren’t completely satisfied with some of the dealers we worked with in the past, and we weren’t happy with some of the equipment prices we saw,” Cory says. “They shared some of their same past struggles with us, and I knew they were happy with SMS Equipment. I was looking to purchase a new skid steer, and I saw they sold Takeuchi compact track loaders.”

Cory called SMS Equipment to inquire about Takeuchi compact equipment, and a sales representative quickly set him up with a demo of a TL8 compact track loader.
“The machine was priced right, and SMS Equipment was good to deal with,” Cory says, adding that he ended up purchasing two TL8 compact track loaders along with various attachments including a smooth-edged bucket, pallet forks, a post hole auger and a breaker hammer. “It’s been an excellent experience for us.”
Built Tough

Built Tough

A key consideration in selecting the Takeuchi TL8 compact track loaders was their ability to hold up to the rigours of the rental industry. Cory says the combination of inexperienced operators and people running rental equipment harder since they don’t own it, can put a great deal of strain on the equipment.

“One of the things we look at is durability, how a machine is going to stand up to the rental industry,” Cory says. “If it stands up to a rental company, it’ll stand up to anybody.”

T.O.C. Rental and Sales also wanted a compact track loader that wasn’t equipped with too many “bells and whistles” to make it easier for new operators to learn.

Ease of operation is another key consideration for us. Is it easy for the customers to get in and get going?” Cory says. “We want to start it with a key and have all the base features needed to get the job done right.”
The other reason T.O.C. Rental and Sales relies on durable equipment with base features is to ensure they get a strong R.O.I. for their fleet.

“We don’t want a ton of extra little things that can potentially break down or malfunction. Cost of ownership and how easy it is to service are key,” Cory says. “We need to know how it is going to bring value to our current line of equipment. The TL8s fit exactly this. They have a vinyl seat that stands up better than a cloth seat, and they’re built for more durability and for getting the job done right.”

A couple of Cory’s customers have been so impressed with Takeuchi’s TL8 compact track loaders that they purchased them shortly after renting them for a project.

“We have had two customers rent out TL8s and then purchased them from SMS Equipment,” he says. “That says something about these machines.”

Reliable Fleet Management System

To help keep track of their Takeuchi equipment, T.O.C. Rental and Sales has started utilizing Takeuchi Fleet Management (T.F.M.) software.

“We really like it,” Cory says. “Being a rental equipment house, you don’t know everyone that you’re dealing with. This gives you that peace of mind knowing where a piece of equipment is located. If someone ends up stealing our equipment off a jobsite, we can see where it is for recovery purposes.”

Cory also appreciates the potential advantages T.F.M. offers as a preventative maintenance tool.

“We can use it to check engine hours or, if we forget to get the engine hours when it comes in, we can log on and utilize it. We use it for checking the hours and the fuel levels,” Cory says. “SMS Equipment can also use T.F.M. to look at the history of the machine to help with potential diagnostics.”

During the cold winter months that typically come with living in Manitoba, having remote monitoring tools are especially handy.

“We can look at engine hours for a machine without having to go outside, which is a bonus,” Cory says.

Service Excellence

T.O.C. Rentals also enjoys working with SMS Equipment because of the top-notch service they receive.

“SMS Equipment is one of the best dealers we’ve ever dealt with for getting a machine serviced if it has a breakdown. Their service department is excellent. If the parts department doesn’t have a part in stock, they order it right away. They’re just easy to deal with,” Cory says.

T.O.C. Rental and Sales also really likes that their light construction sales representative, Ian Webster, is a Red Seal certified heavy equipment technician with eight years of experience working as a service technician for SMS Equipment.

“If we have any issues, he’s really knowledgeable about everything,” Cory says.

Webster enjoys using his knowledge as a service technician to help his clients whenever he can.

“I helped Cory do some work on one of his machines when he bought some winter tracks for it. Since he’d never put them on before, we spent a morning together changing them over, so he and one of his employees would be able to tackle them again later,” Webster says. “I really enjoy working with Cory and his whole team at T.O.C. They’re just great people to deal with.”

While T.O.C. Rental and Sales doesn’t have any aggressive expansion plans, they intend to grow where it makes sense.

“We grow where there’s opportunity to grow,” Cory says. “If we see an opportunity with a piece of equipment that we get a lot of calls on, then we look at adding that to our fleet. It’s how we’ve grown most of the time.”
