In surface mining operations, technology is playing an increasing role in ensuring the safety of everyone on site. One of the key technologies leading the way are collision awareness systems (CAS).

According to the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table, 30 to 40 per cent of mining industry fatalities are related to failures in vehicle interaction controls.

CAS systems play a critical role in helping earthmoving operations reduce risk and make safer decisions in real time.

On a recent episode of the Mining Now podcast, Wabtec’s Craig Hoffman, joined host Rory Bamford and SMS Equipment’s Dillon McKinnon to break down the capabilities of Wabtec’s Collision Avoidance System Generation 3.

Wabtec’s CAS technology is designed to help customers operate more safely without overwhelming operators with constant alerts – a common frustration among operators when using these types of systems.

“It will drive operator tampering and distrust in the system, so very high accuracy sensing is fundamental to the performance of the system,” Hoffman explains.

Wabtec’s latest system brings a step change in performance, including high-accuracy sensing that supports close-proximity interactions and new curved detection beams that prevent unnecessary alarms during normal, safe activity.
