Giving back to the communities where we live and work has long been a priority for SMS Equipment. Across our 40+ locations, the communities we engage with are as diverse in population as they are in geography. However, one thing rings true no matter the region: people are in need, and that need is growing.
According to the United Way Centraide Canada, 35,000 Canadians are homeless on any given night. Food Banks Canada reports there were almost 2 million visits to food banks across Canada this past March, up 32% over March 2022 and a whopping 78.5% compared to March 2019. Community agencies are working tirelessly to meet the increased need of our vulnerable populations.
That’s why SMS Equipment is committing funds to helping end the cycle of poverty among our communities in two key areas: homelessness and food insecurity. On November 15, National Philanthropy Day, we are committing $100,000 to local emergency shelters and food banks across Canada and Alaska.
The donation, to be distributed to more than 70 community partners, is one of several initiatives of SMS Equipment’s community investment program, a key priority of which is investing in health, wellness and safety.
“SMS Equipment is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within the diverse communities where we operate,” says Kelly-Ann Cordner, EVP, Human Resources & CHRO. “Access to food, a safe place to sleep and other services that help end the cycle of poverty are critical to quality of life.”
In addition to the $100,00 to emergency shelters and foodbanks, SMS Equipment supports a broad range of organizations and initiatives that benefit communities in the areas of education; arts, culture and leisure; the environment; indigenous relationships; and, health, wellness and safety. Partnership highlights for 2023 include donations to the Children’s Miracle Network, Mining for Miracles, the Northern Lights Health Foundation, Le Grand défi Pierre Lavoie and sponsorship of the Wood Buffalo 2023 Arctic Winter Games.
