Hybrid Technology

The fact that you find yourself here right now says you believe in the viability of hybrid technology and the positive impact it can have on your operation. At SMS Equipment, we’ve been long-time proponents of the hybrid approach, partnering with OEMs who also embrace that vision and have committed themselves to its development. Shown below are just a few examples of the hybrid solutions at work today, their features, and the benefits they can provide to help you navigate the waters to a greener operation.
Hybrid Crawler Excavators
Komatsu

Hybrid Crawler Excavators

In Komatsu’s unique hybrid system, the machine’s fast, responsive, swing action is captured by an electric swing motor-generator which regenerates energy as the upper structure slows down and converts it into electric energy. That regenerated energy is stored in the capacitor and can either be used to swing or used by the generator-motor to assist in engine acceleration. The Hybrid system can help to reduce fuel consumption— and emissions — by up to 40%, while operating with substantially less ambient noise.

Hybrid Compact Excavators
Takeuchi

Hybrid Compact Excavators

Takeuchi’s hybrid compact excavators utilize a dual-power design, allowing both diesel and electric operation. When in electric mode, the electric motor enables low noise/zero-emission operation, making work possible on job sites such as indoor demolition, utility installation, food processing facilities, hospitals, schools and others with limited accessibility, noise and clean air requirements. In addition, machine performance is identical regardless of operating mode.

Tandem Rollers (Compactors)
BOMAG

Tandem Rollers (Compactors)

Tandem rollers, which are continually braking and changing direction during the asphalt compaction process, are particularly suitable for hybrid technology. BOMAG’s BW 174 AP Tandem Rollers use a hydraulic hybrid drive to store braking energy, which can then be released flexibly during peak loads. The net result is a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions — with zero loss in performance.
